Students Advance to States in Odyssey of the Mind

The district hosted the Odyssey of the Mind Regional competition at the Caroline G. Atkinson Intermediate School for the fourth consecutive year.
Students from different schools filled the building to compete in three different divisions and five different problems.
Under the guidance of Geraldine LaPenne and Demelina Valonzo, Atkinson’s Odyssey of the Mind teams consisted of Genesis Aviles, Chase De Verteuil, Alyssa Donnelly, Cora Jones, Charlotte Manning, Delanni McKenna, Alani Nunez, Deanna Reyes, Brianna Rodriguez, Sophia Rodriguez, Gabriel Rosalia, Ava Smith, Julianna Tapia and Tamia Wooden. Students and staff had a wonderful time showing their creativity and team spirit.
Odyssey of the Mind celebrates outside-of-the-box thinking, as well as teamwork, collaboration and creativity. The teams worked diligently to solve their long-term problems, which involved script writing, costume fabrication and scenery development.  Students were also prepped for the other half of the competition, which is called spontaneous questioning, and requires students to engage in higher-level thinking and develop a quick-wit.
Their hard work and dedication paid off, as Freeport teams took first and third place in their division and problem. The team that placed first will go on to compete at the state competition in Binghamton University on April 4.
