Freeport annual peace march rolls on
While this time is like no other due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for social distancing, that did not deter Freeport Public Schools from leading the way toward peace by moving forward with the planned annual peace march in a unique and memorable way.
On Saturday, May 2, led by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham, members of the Board of Education, district administrators, Mayor Robert T. Kennedy, and Executive Director of the Freeport Fire Department, Raymond Maguire gathered at Freeport High School and began their peace march on wheels.
"During this challenging time of COVID-19, it is especially important for us to focus on both inner peace and peace in our communities," said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham. "Our peace march activities this year are in honor of our frontline heroes who have given so much of themselves for us."
A caravan of cars, decorated in yellow and bearing messages of peace, drove through the Freeport community, using the traditional path taken each year for the parade, spreading messages of peace and community unity. In the past, the peace march on foot has drawn more than a thousand participants. This year, community residents were asked to show their support by adorning their windows and doors with the annual peace march logo, or to send photos of themselves to be included in the virtual peace march.
"The Freeport Cares Annual Peace March is a long tradition we have of coming together in peace," said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham. "It has grown each year and is always a well-attended, joyous event. It was a disappointment to realize that we could not come together as a group in peace this year. Our car parade of peace and virtual peace march video and photos are the next best thing."
