Freeport School District's four elementary schools, Archer Street, Bayview Avenue, Leo F. Giblyn and New Visions recently completed a Winter Reading Challenge hosted by #freeportreads.

The competition encouraged students to read in fun ways with winter-themed ideas and activities and track their minutes using the digital reading platform Raz-Kids.

The students of Leo F. Giblyn Elementary School were the competition winners reading 139,075 minutes with 99% of students participating. The top readers from Giblyn were Natalia Collado, April Cruz Quintanilla, Christian Nurse, Aiden O'Brien, Leann Paraison, , Sydney Rembert, Ariela Rodriguez and Kayla Rodriguez.

As a district, the four elementary schools achieved a 93% participation rate among students and logged a total of 440,767 minutes reading their favorite fiction and non-fiction books.

To celebrate the conclusion of the Winter Reading Challenge, the schools celebrated with a Fun Friday in which both in-person and remote students dressed in their PJs and read their favorite book to one of their own stuffed animals.

#freeportreads was established to build engagement and excitement for reading across the Freeport School District and community. Its goal is to promote an active life of literacy among students and families.
