Virtual Early College Awareness Day at Dodd

Dodd Middle School students received valuable insight from representatives from college and universities along the east coast during the school's Early College Awareness Day.

While the Dodd Early College Awareness Day would normally be an in-person event with representatives from colleges and universities from New York State attending, the virtual event allowed students access to a broader reach with post-secondary education institutions as far away as California joining the program.

"This year presented us with a unique opportunity to expand our reach and give our students access to learn about colleges outside of New York state," said Anthony Dalli, Dodd Middle School social studies teacher and Early College Awareness Day coordinator. "Our planning committee worked diligently to ensure this event provided our students with a much broader range of college opportunities to consider."

Speakers from the Howard University, Molloy College, Nova Southeastern University, Stony Brook University, University of Southern California, Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, University of Rhode Island, Virginia State University and many more virtually presented to students throughout the day to discuss early college preparations, the benefits of gaining a college education, and the social aspects of college life.

In addition to the virtual presentations, students also had in-school lessons where their teachers taught them about the financial aspects of going to college including planning for the cost of books, supplies, what it takes to outfit a college dorm room and more.
