Two students from Freeport Public Schools virtually performed at the Senator John Brooks Virtual Black History Month/Women's History Month celebration.

Freeport High School senior, Sameerah Lawal's performance of "Life Every Voice and Sing" and New Visions third-grader Alyssa Marcel's recital of the poem'The Miracle of Morning" by Amanda Gorman were aired for hundreds of virtual event participants.

Following the airing of Alyssa reciting the poem, moderator Lucia Martinez asked the third grader what Women's History Month and Black History Month means to her. She responded "Both women's history and black history have helped me learn about myself, my friends and my family. It also helps me learn about my culture, the culture of others and about new things."

The virtual Black History Month and Women's History Month celebration was hosted by Senator John Brooks to recognize and celebrate the representatives from the towns and communities across District 8 that contribute their time and resources and deserve to be recognized for their success stories.
