For the past 25 years, students in the Bayview School have participated in the annual Adopt-a-Cop program bringing fourth graders and the Village of Freeport police officers together to build relationships with local law enforcement. This year, the program kicked off virtually with officers introducing themselves to the students via a Google meet and then speaking about their work in local law enforcement. They explained how keeping the students, their families and others in the Freeport community safe is their top priority.
Several students were able to ask the officers questions about their role in law enforcement which included "What was your favorite case?" and "Do you ever get scared?"
Following the questions and answers session, Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Kishore Kuncham, addressed the students explaining to them the important commitment police officers make by taking an oath to protect and serve the community, and thanked the officers for taking time out of their day to spend with the students.
Ending the virtual event, students committed to write emails during school hours to their adopted officers to learn more about their roles, ask questions, express their appreciation and tell them about events and lessons happening in school. The Adopt-a-Cop program is organized with the Village of Freeport Police Department and Freeport Public Schools each year to foster communication between students and law enforcement.
