Freeport Public Schools Board of Education, administration, students and staff were joined by the Village of Freeport for the 12th Annual Freeport Cares Peace March.
While limited in capacity due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, community members also joined the Peace March virtually to celebrate the messages of peace and nonviolence in the Freeport schools, community, and worldwide.
Prior to joining together to walk through the Village of Freeport, Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Kishore Kuncham addressed those in attendance stating "I take this opportunity to salute and thank everyone for their amazing role in these times. Not only fighting the pandemic, but also fighting the endemic racism and biases in our world." He went on to say, "We are at a very pivotal time and there is a great amount of work ahead of us, but I know each one of you as present, and future leaders, are contributing to bigger societal harmony by being here today and practicing peace and spreading hope."
Several elected officials including Village of Freeport Deputy Mayor and Freeport School District Board of Education Trustee Ronald J. Ellerbe spoke to the Peace March participants thanking them for helping to promote peace in the Freeport community and beyond.
Under beautiful blue skies school officials and dignitaries then took the first steps of the march, followed by all participants who wore yellow, the universal color of peace. The march concluded at Freeport High School after the 1.2-mile walk.
The annual Freeport Cares Peace March is a combined school district and community event honoring the commitment to fostering unity within the Freeport community and globally.
