Freeport juniors and seniors excitedly gathered at the high school's Performing Arts Center for a combined National Honor Society (NHS) Induction and Senior Recognition Ceremony on June 3rd. Both ceremonies were postponed due to the pandemic, but the district was able to safely gather students in person, while families and friends joined the event virtually via livestream.
The ceremony inducted students from the class of 2021 and 2022 and included a warm and enthusiastic welcome from NHS advisor Eileen Shultis, the traditional candle lighting ceremony, introduction of officers and explanations of the four pillars of the NHS: scholarship, character, leadership and service.
Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Kishore Kuncham lead the new inductees in the oath to upstand the pillars of the National Honor Society and following spoke proudly to the students.
"Congratulations Freeport National Honor Society members, you have worked hard to be here, but your work has just begun. I know you realize the effort and courage it takes to be a leader and make a difference," said Dr. Kuncham, "You have the opportunity to make our world a better place. You have the determination, wisdom, commitment and empathy to transform lives and be the change we all need."
Freeport High School Principal Joseph Mille, with the assistance of NHS president Shyanne Gardner, presented the junior class inductees with a medal to represent their accomplishments as newly inducted members of the National Honor Society.
Following, Eileen Shultis, Freeport High School teacher and National Honor Society advisor, proudly recognized seniors from the Class of 2021 and Principal Joe Mille, along with incoming NHS president Brenna Igneri, presented each senior with their honors cords, which the seniors will proudly wear during the Freeport High School graduation ceremony on June 18th.
To close the joint ceremony former Freeport High School teacher and treasurer of the local non-profit Dollars for Scholars, Ms. Linda Hendrickson, then presented 21 Freeport High School students with a scholarship from Dollars for Scholars, which has awarded over $300,000 to students in Freeport Public Schools since 1989.
