Leo F. Giblyn hosts 2022 International Day Luncheon

Music, dancing, poems, cheering and the aromas of delicious food filled the gymnasium at Leo F. Giblyn Elementary School as the fourth-grade class held their International Day Luncheon.

"After two years, we are back and so glad to be able to host our International Day Luncheon once again," said Ms. Amy Lederer, Principal. "Today is about celebrating and embracing the many different cultures that make up the wonderful students at our school."

The gymnasium was beautifully decorated with colorful projects by students from every grade level - posters of landscapes and drawings of flags from around the globe and many more pieces of art that reflected on the cultural backgrounds of each student.

The theme for the 2022 International Day Luncheon was a quote by Ola Joseph, "Diversity is not about how we differ. Diversity is about embracing one another's uniqueness." The quote was read aloud by the students and then others expanded on the quote by giving speeches explaining what the quote means to them.

In addition to reflecting on the day's theme, the Giblyn step team performed with pride and enthusiasm, the fourth-grade class sang two folk songs from Jamaica and Mexico, and the Mandarin club and the fourth-grade orchestra performed.

Prior to enjoying a multicultural feast with foods donated by local restaurants, Giblyn staff and families, the Mary Johnson International Day Award was given to orchestra teacher Catherine Beck. Each year this award is presented to a member of the Giblyn staff who embodies the characteristics of Mary Johnson, a retired Giblyn teacher who went above and beyond in promoting, cultivating, and celebrating diversity.
